MILF Hunter vs. Naughty America
Many of the biggest, best and most successful porn sites on the web (Hustler (review), Playboy (read Sir Rodney’s review), XonDemand, Videobox (read review) make their money by distributing offline product online; they are differentiated by their brands, and the quality of their offline products, but basically they are using the web to distribute adult products made for distribution on DVD.
Newer sites, and sites with no offline brand support,
like MILF Hunter (read review), have had to leverage the unique qualities of the medium to compete. When it launched in the ancient days of 1998, MILF Hunter and its sister site, Mike’s Apartment (read review), created a sensation with their high concept porn approach. This new xxx material, created exclusively for the web, is something that can be marketed easily online, by affiliates, and this is the key to the success of the no brand upstart, and the many spin off sites: Mike’s Apartment (read review), Captain Stabbin (read review), Tranny Surprise (read review), We Live Together (read review), InTheVIP (read review). Each of these sites has created unique storylines, characters, and context for straight ahead, low budget suck and fucks movies, and raking in hundreds (not a typo) of millions of dollars in the process, eclipsing the big brands like Hustler and Playboy. Now, just as the Hunters long run in the top slot has started to slide, a new porn network has emerged from the pack to take the adult Internet by storm: Naughty America, which has taken the faux “reality” genre of porn, pioneered by the Hunters,
to a new level by simply doing the Hunters better. Better stories, better production values, better sex performers, better use of the web medium. Their sites, which include Naughty America University (review), My Friends Hot Mom (review), and Dirty Latina Maids (review) aren’t as big or as popular as the Hunter sites, yet. But they will be, because they are better and will be better able to avoid the trap of repetitive same-ness the ultimately dooms the Hunter sites, whose new episodes have come to resemble re-runs of their fresher days. Hunter now competes on price, not quality, which is a sure sign of decline. Naughty America interacts with its fans on a porn fan board titled “Naughty Country Club,” while the Hunter crowd has always kept things on the downlow.
Mark my words: mainstream media will follow the same patterm we’ve seen in porn. First, there will be downloading of content, then the differentiators that leverage the unique qualities of the medium will emerge. And, as we’re seeing in porn, those that leverage the medium, like the Hunters, and Naughty America, will eventually own it, and make billions. You heard it first on Sir Rodney’s porn blog.
