One of the great things about being Sir Rodney is getting to know some of the very unusual and often surprisingly gifted people in the sex biz. Two weeks ago we had a wonderful Vicky Vette Interview. She told us stories of her escapades on the porn sets of the San Fernando Valley and shared a few trade secrets. Today, we’re going to talk about a new porn starlet who is (almost) young enough to be Vicky’s daughter, Joanna Angel. Like, Vicky, Angel is one smart cookie, so you have something to talk about while you’re waiting to get hard again.

Joanna Angel’s an ambitious little vixen (all 4’ 11” of her) with huge DD tits from the suburbs of New Jersey who graduated from Rutgers U in `03 and decided to turn her arty website, which featured her writing about punk culture and model shots of herself and her friends, into a business. Burning Angel (see Sir Rodney’s review), of which she is editor in chief and co-publisher (with Mitch Fontaine), has been growing steadily and is increasingly successful. It now features 110 models, with 20 original hardcore movies. Joanna gets angry and defensive when you compare her site to the famous Suicide Girls (SG – see Sir Rodney’s review). BA may have girls that look the same, but the similarity ends there. Put another way, BA is New York, SG is San Francisco. Can you really be punk on the West Coast? More on that in a minute.

Joanna really got our attention with her Halloween featurette, Re-Penetrator (see our review) a parody of Stuart Gordon’s `80’s shlocker, Re-Animator (itself a parody), and really it is a much better film, with much deeper meaning and, oh yeah, hardcore sex. We are just crazy about everything Joanna does, from working as an escort and stripper to get her fledgling business off the ground (websites don’t make themselves), her often brilliant and honest writing, her astonishing Re-Penetrator (she was a nymphomaniac zombie) which nearly got her thrown in jail, her florid tattoos (we’ve been dying to write about them – these are not just any slutty fuck me lower back tattoos, but works of art on her body). In short, Sir Rodney is CRAZY about Joanna, and she won’t even sleep with him. She says Sir Rodney reminds her of – get this – her uncle. Oh, the pain and humiliation!

Nonetheless, we were pleased to interview beautiful entrepreneur on the eve of the release of her first studio picture, Joanna’s Angels, another porn parody, this time for Hustler subsidiary VCA, which has been making bank with Eon McKai’s punk pornos, “Art School Sluts” and “Kill Girl Kill”. Joanna’s Angels is an over the top, campy, punk rock spoof of Charlie’s Angels in which Joanna and her Angels (Sabrina Sparx and Kylee Kross) are sent on a mission to protect the inhabitants of New York from deranged Lower East Side hipster Tommy Pistol, who has been hypnotized into thinking that Los Angeles is cool. Joanna must find Pistol, and reverse the spell. Pistol roams through the streets of New York, luring everyone and anyone in sight to the west coast with romanticized tales of comfortable weather, fresh avocados, friendly neighbors, and Sean Penn. The only way he could ever go back to his lower east side punk lifestyle is with a “magic hand-job” that can only be given by Joannaherself. The movie was written, produced, and directed entirely by – who else - Joanna Angel.

Angel took the time to talk to us from the set of one of her weekly photo shoots.

Is BA a success? How long will you go on with it?

I’m not living in a mansion and riding around in a limo, but I am doing what I love every single day, which is success to me. I could do this all my life, which is what Burning Angel is all about.

What is BA about?

BA is a punk rock porn site, which is not to say it’s about what people look like. We do whatever we want whenever we want. We try to push the limits in lots of different ways. For example, Sabrina is masturbating with a lollypop right now. The movie is totally making fun of California, Sex in the City, myself, my company. People have an idea about what alt porn is. Just when everyone thinks they know what it is, I want to change it. I’m a subversive at heart.

Why porn? Why not Hollywood?

My sister is actress. I can’t imagine what it would be like to play a part – it is much cooler to be myself. Even when I’m working for other directors, I’m hired to play myself.

I guess I wasn’t talking about being an actress. You could write or direct mainstream movies or television.

Hollywood is stupid. I like porn. But, honestly, I don’t know how I wound up here. I tried out a like of things, like political activism, Marxism, marketing, statistics, but this is what I like to do. When I started doing Burning Angel I found my calling. I don’t want to be anywhere else, or do anything else.

What’s the next movie After Joanna’s Angels?

It’s hard to say. I’m in editing hell, just trying to finish the movie. This is a really big opportunity for me. I want prove what I can do while people are watching. After this, I’d like to do Joanna’s Angels II if they let me (if VCA pays for it). And more shorts are coming up on the Burning Angel site that I directed.

Tell us about your tattoos. How many do you have? What are they?

I have eight. The biggest is on my back. It’s an angel and devil. The angel is reaching out her hand and the devil is crying. Inside everyone there’s an angel and a devil, good and bad, and you don’t know which is which. I think I’m an angel. Or a devil, but the devil is an angel (see above). On my right arm is a venus fly trap with a quote from a Margaret Atwood poem “touch me and you will burn”; on my left shoulder is a quote from my favorite Kurt Vonnegut book, Slaughterhouse Five, “so it goes” with Greek dramatic masks, but the masks don’t mean anything, I just think they look good with the quote. I got two new tattoos, little diamonds on my hips. I always wanted a guy to buy me diamonds so finally I just got these for myself. Now I’ll have them forever. From the guys I date, I’m lucky to get a cup of coffee.

You frequently write about your desire for a husband and kids – do you yearn for a middle class lifestyle?

That’s just what I write about in my journal. There’s images like that inside of every girl. The downside of this pornographic lifestyle is that it makes it hard to have a relationship. You wind up in weird places with weird people, rock musicians, other people in industry, who are as messed up as you are. It’s typical for women to base their lives on men. They find work that is just good enough for a while, till they get married and have babies and move to the suburbs. Women strive for mediocrity, because it’s easier that way. I can see how my life would be. But I can’t do that. Anything I do, I’m passionate about, and I want to be the best at it. I’m passionate about porn. I want to be bigger than Jenna Jameson. I think I can be.

Complete this sentence: If I had a million dollars I would… ?

Pay off my credit card debt, and buy good camera equipment. I’d buy a limo and have a driver take me everywhere (I hate driving) and I’d have a big loft in Chelsea and let all the Burning Angel girls stay there all the time.
