Atomic Vixens: Radiocative Porn
Sir Rodney recently made a new friend, filmmaker Ron Roysyer, whose Atomic Vixens (VCA) is part of a new wave of modern porn films pioneered by Joanna Angel (Joanna’s Angels) and Eon McKai (Art School Sluts, Kill Girl Kill, New Wave Hookers). McKai’s got a new Vivid deal, to make porn movies under the Vivid-Alt label, which will allow him to shepherd edgier low budget fare. Not coincidentally, the first flick, THE REBELLE ROUSERS (out this month) is from Winkytiki (new wave pin up photographier Octavio C. Arizala), who collaborated with Royster on Atomic Vixens.
Royster sent me a critic’s copy of his Atomic Vixens, and I have to say while the sex was good, the film – notice I did not say video - may have the best art direction of any porn film, ever. The production design by Winkytiki, who co-produced and “guest directed” one of the scenes, absolutely makes the movie, which otherwise makes about as much sense as your typical porno, although it does so with considerable flair. I guess that’s what they mean by “Erotivision.” The sub-title “Escape from the Valley of the Sluts” is an odd homage to 60s soft core impresario Russ Meyer, whose insanely over-hyped crap (“Beyond the Valley of the Dolls”) is distinguished mostly by the breast size of his soon-to-be-forgotten leads, Dolly Read and Cynthia Meyers. Also, Sir Rodney has been looking for the Valley of the Sluts for years and certainly, were we able to locate it, we would most definitely NOT want to escape from it, ever. The other distinguishing feature of Royster’s movie is the refreshing modern surf soundtrack, a welcome change from the usual needle down crap innocuously accompanying even the better porn studio titles. And the box art is to die for. VCA lavished some money on this part, and they are to be commended for their good taste.
Finally, there is something very special about the hour-long “behind the scenes” documentary “extra” included with the Atomic Vixens DVD. Made by Royster protégé Kat Purcell, the documentary delivers a fresh, funny, and insightful view of the underground talent, hard work and hijinks behind the movie. James Deen is far more charming behind the scenes than he has ever been with his prodigious erection (by the way, there are no fluffers, that’s a myth); Mika Tan is far more genuine and exciting as a person than she is as a porn star; and Octavio C. Arizala is the underground ertotic photographer and artiste from central casting. Also, his Winkytiki web site kicks ass. It is one of the best free sites on the web (other than mine, and Lukeisback.com).
Which brings us back to the enigmatic Mr. Royster, the ringmaster and visionary responsible for this delightful bit of mayhem. The Chapel Hill, NC resident is spending more and more time in El Lay these days. He looks every inch the music industry veteran he is, having worked as a roadie and musician. Porn pundit Gram Ponante did an excellent profile of Royster while he was shooting Atomic Vixens. You can read about it here.
